What is a Book Buffet you ask?
Yes, it involves food and yes, it involves books.
It also includes the opportunity to read a lot of great books in a very short period of time. Read on for more info.
Recently, Mrs. Z had the pleasure of having two of Ms. Frost's Reading classes join her for an hour in the LMC. Ms. Frost and Mrs. Z provided chips, candy, and other snacks to compliment our book buffet lesson.
The LMC tables were set-up with placemats, napkins, and books galore. At each place setting, there was a different book. Each book was specially chosen by Ms. Frost or Mrs. Z based on best seller lists, professional, teacher, and student recommendations or simply because we had enjoyed reading these books in the past. The objective was to choose books from every genre imaginable: historic fiction, comedy, love stories, sci-fi, fantasy, time travel, real life stories, drama, etc.

It didn't matter where each student sat, they just needed to have a book in front of them. For the duration of the class period, Ms. Frost timed it: every five minutes students were able to read the book in front of them. It did not matter if they started from the beginning, middle or end. All they were required to do was rate the book on a scale of 1-5 on a worksheet provided by Ms. Frost.
They also needed to write comments regarding the book. Some comments included, "Too many pages for me.", "Each chapter starts with a poem or song lyric. How does that tie into the book?", and "I want to check this book out!"
At the end of the five minutes, the student passed the book on to someone else and selected another book from a classmate or from the book buffet in the middle of the table.

As a parting gift, each student was provided with a free bookmark in addition to their snacks.
Overall, the Book Buffet was a great success. Over 90% of Ms. Frost's students checked out a book. By sampling them beforehand, they virtually guaranteed they had a good read for over the Holiday break!
A BIG Thank You to Ms. Frost and all of her 3rd and 6th hour students!
